1st Race Post-Surgery & Running with the Boys

First thank you all for the well wishes on today’s race.  I wasn’t sure how I’d do but….. all went well!!!

It was suppose to be mid-30’s and windy, so I layered up.  (I did wrap my jacket around my waist about half way through)

Top-short sleeve tech shirt, long sleeve zip neck tech shirt, light jacket
Bottom-tights

We got there plenty early, as it was a sell out race and we wanted to make sure we had time to park, hit the head, etc.It was chilly out so we hung out in the ballroom of the hotel, as did many others.

I have to give a shout out to my boys, Artie & Tom!  They got me through the first 10 miles at just over an 8 minute pace. It was Artie’s first time running with us and he commented how consistent we were.  I guess for awhile we kept doing 8:01 or 8:02.  It was a tad windy at points and there were a few hills but we kept on plugging away.  I almost forgot about taking my Gu until mile 8.  One of my favorite parts to this race is the last 4.5 miles which is all along the ocean and where I often train.  The ocean makes me happy.  :-) As we neared the last 3 miles I eased back a bit, well that and I think the boys kicked it in, but we all finished strong!

Time: 1:47:10
Avg Pace: 8:13 (Garmin said 8:06)
Place: 15 out of 87 in my age group

I did surprisingly well!  Only 2 minutes slower than last year, maybe if I had kept up with Tom & Artie I would have come close to doing the same, but I just didn’t feel like kicking it in at the end was the wisest thing to do (Artie did 1:44:50,  Tom did 1:45:00).  So I took it easy.  Still not too shabby considering my surgery & time off from running.  :-)   Nowhere near the 2 hours I was worried I’d be near.

After finishing we headed back to the course to watch my mom and some other friends finish.  My mom did awesome, as usual!

She won her age group with a time of 2:08:53!!! The lady is consistent, the past few 1/2’s she has done have all been 2:08.

After seeing her finish and a couple other folks, I headed inside to change some of my sweaty clothes.  Oh and grab a beer…..

Yum, a nice cold Smuttynose!!

I also had an unpictured piece of pizza and a couple of Lindt chocolate balls.  Gotta love tasty race sponsors.

After sticking around to see my mom get her age group prize, I headed home to shower and get on with the day.  Did some grocery shopping, laundry and now watching some Olympic Hockey!!!!

Go USA!!!

How was your weekend?? Hopefully you had some fun and some nice weather.

Britt

Congrats! It’s so difficult coming back to the race scene after an injury surgery/recovery; you did wonderfully!

Also, I love that you and your mother race together! That’s adorable. I wish I could convince one of my parents to race with me–even if it’s just walking a 5K. Oh well, hopefully, I will be the parent racing with my kids!

  3. Your mom rocks! My mom has been running for a while, but has never done a race. We’ll do a 5K together on mother’s day; I wrote a bit about it here: http://finnyfinds.wordpress.com/2010/02/06/music-to-move-to/
